A Brave Soldier

For one of my classes we had to do a poster campaign addressing anything relating to HIV/AIDS (well the class is Make Art Stop AIDS) and my group focused on the inadequacies of American Freedom specifically Gays in the Military. While researching facts to present to my class I found this article from the New Yorker about a military hero who's darkest secret followed him to his death in the Iraq War. I respect and applaud his bravery and honor, part of me is deeply saddened he couldn't express his sexuality. Reading stories about the 12,000 military personnel discharged for their sexuality breaks my heart. These men and women are protecting our freedoms and we can't allow them the same freedoms and opportunities we all have.
